Singer and raconteur Bessie Jones moved to St. Simon’s Island off the coast of Georgia and joined the Sea Island Singers in 1933. She was a vast repository of traditional song and story—ring shouts, game songs and spirituals—many of which she learned from her grandfather, Jet Sampson, a former slave born in Africa.
Tim turned sixty just before we recorded this and penned several new verses the morning of the session. His lyrics about time being a puzzle and counting “sixty rings on my tree of life” capture the spirit and gravity of the song.
