While vacationing on the Caribbean island of Carriacou, Bruce spent time with
fiddler and primitivist painter Canute Caliste. He later discovered that Alan Lomax
had visited years before and featured Canute on the collection Caribbean Voyage:
Carriacou Calaloo. We found this anthem on the same album, sung by Edith Hector
and chorus, which sounded distinctly African to my ear. I wrote an accompaniment
on the banjo, which I “prepared” by placing a piece of foam next to the bridge, evoking
a West-African ngoni. It was a complete joy to record this with so many wonderful
