Scottish singer Jeannie Roberston was “discovered” by folksong collector Hamish
Henderson in Aberdeen in 1953 and recorded by Alan Lomax soon after. She was
born a traveler, a group of nomadic people who roamed Scotland in caravans, making
temporary campsites in a glen or by the seaside. Travellers typically worked as
hawkers, tinkers, traders, peddlers and fortunetellers. Jeannie was raised in an
entirely oral culture where stories and ballads formed “cognitive maps” of their
history.22 She overheard “Maids When You’re Young” thirty years before and only
remembered a few verses. More complete versions of this old bawdy song can be
quite raunchy, so we’re glad to stick with this more rueful warning to young maidens
not to wed an old man. Greg’s improvised bass accompaniment to the final verse is
playfully full of twists and turns.
